Have You Injured a Disc?
Have you been told that you have a” slipped disc” or have a disc injury? They can vary from slight to severe, but most require the attention of a trained chiropractor. Our chiropractic clinic can help you understand your condition and help to develop the best treatment option for you.
The spinal discs are made of cartilage and are the “shock absorbers” of the spine. They are composed of a tough outer ring, and a soft gel-like center. A healthy disc is very strong, however repetitive stress on a disc over time weakens the outer covering, and a simple motion like bending over to lift something can cause the disc to herniate, resulting in back pain, and most often pain and numbness and tingling into the leg and foot. If you are diagnosed with a protruding disc it means that the gel is pushed out or bulging, and is most likely pushing on or pinching a nerve, and can be very serious in some cases.
A disc “extrusion” is the worst type of disc injury. What it means is that the gel escapes out of the disc, and this may lead to surgery.
Signs and Symptoms of a Disc Injury
All of the above issues tend to result in considerable back pain, numbness, and limitation in range of motion due to the irritation of the nerve roots at the point where the injury occurs and the impact this has on the surrounding tissues. A number of distressing symptoms can arise from this nerve irritation and damage, including but not limited to:
- Back pain
- Neck pain
- Weak legs or feet
- Leg and foot pain, numbness and tingling (also known as sciatica)
- Loss of bladder or bowel control in severe cases
Chiropractic Care for Disc Injury
Dr. Barrick has a proven track record of providing both short-term pain relief and long-term recovery with disc herniations. He is certified in a technique specific to low back disc herniations called Cox Flexion/Distraction Technique. This requires a specialized table that over time will “push” the disc back into place where it can heal. In his many years in practice, he has successfully saved many patients from needing surgery, and restored them to full function. If you have a disc injury, call us at Barrick Family Chiropractic today to receive a consultation and start on the path to recovery.
